Leonardo Di Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet are all well known for their beautiful artworks, some which sell for millions of pounds a piece. However, many makeup artists will tell you that nowadays art cannot just be defined as paintings, drawings or sculptures with peoples faces being the ultimate canvas on which to work from.

A talented makeup artist can paint a face in such a way that an ordinary looking person can be transformed into a stunning individual within a few hours. Some would argue that makeup is merely war paint which can easily be applied without much technique or artistic talent, however may famous makeup artists and the grateful celebrities they transform will beg to differ.

There are also several variants of makeup from heavy, dramatic stage makeup to makeup for television shows to makeup for modelling shoots and catwalk shows. There is also a great demand for more natural looking makeup perfect for weddings and daytime events all which require different skills and materials. Although a makeup artist may not be required to draw fine art or sculpt intricate models, they are required to blend colours expertly, contour and define, hide, conceal and highlight in a way that many of us simply cannot achieve. We can also not forget the use of makeup on hospital based shows such as ER and Casualty where actors are transformed into car crash and assault victims covered in cuts, bruises and blood which could not look any more realistic if it was real.

The late makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin was one of the first to try and change people’s perceptions about people who worked in the makeup and beauty industry and used his talents to transform may celebrities in to other celebrities and historical figures in history. He once took Elvis’ daughter Lisa Marie Presley and made her up into Marilyn Monroe with a remarkable likeness, Hilary Swank into Raquel Welch and even took film star Winona Ryder and transformed her into the legend Elizabeth Taylor, all with the power of makeup. Aucoin also used prosthetics if he felt the need, proving that the use of makeup goes far beyond powder, eyeshadow and blusher.

Another great name in the industry is Peter Phillips who currently holds the position as creative director for Chanel cosmetics. He started out as a graphic designer but started working as a makeup artist after going to the very inspiring Paris fashion week.
