The New Year is a fantastic time to freshen up your space and 2013’s home décor trends promise original and stand-out style to those with enough daring in their design streak to follow them.

Colour Trends

Pantone, the world’s leading colour authority foresees neutrals making a major comeback during the next twelve months. The bright and somewhat shocking shades of the previous seasons will give way to more soothing, warm, and classically neutral backdrops for trendy accessories that are set to make their mark in 2013.

Here are some of the key colour movements:

  • Yellows become softer and less sporty
  • Olive gets stronger
  • Leather brown becomes a more dominant basic
  • Camel is swapped for cappuccino and cream
  • Reds show more undertones of orange

However, Pantone chose the colour of the year to be ‘emerald green’. If you want to be trendy and hop on the emerald green bandwagon this year, first test your eye for this bold colour by incorporating small accessories such as cushions, glasses, or vases into your décor before splashing out on an expensive investment piece.

Graphic Patterns

In 2012 graphic patterns were everywhere and they will be staying in 2013. One pattern which stood out the most last year was the ‘chevron’ print, which is still expected to be popular. The other graphics you’ll be seeing more of in 2013 are:

  • Large plaids
  • Marrakesh Patterns
  • Herringbone
  • Houndstooth
  • Stripes

These patterns are very popular on items such as: cushions, rugs, and curtains. If you wish to incorporate them into your existing décor, you can either try integrating small items like cushions, or go all out and combine the same pattern for all your accessories. Just a quick tip – they look best on a neutral backdrop.

Sunburst Mirrors

If you are unsure of how to decorate your walls, your best bet is to hang a mirror. In 2013 you will be seeing sunburst mirrors appearing everywhere. They are definitely a statement piece and have the ability to completely transform a blank wall.

Recycled Wood

Although recycled wood is not a new trend, it is definitely one that will be around in 2013. Wooden walls, cork flooring, bamboo flooring, and reclaimed wood alongside metals will be seen everywhere this year.

Painted Vintage Furniture

Whether its genuine vintage or mock-vintage furniture, the spotlight will be on it in 2013. If you have any furniture that you can “make do and mend” then go ahead and customise your own unique piece of furniture.
